Edible Plate Art: Creative and Fun Snacks for Kids

Nothing brightens a young kid’s day more than a special healthy snack that’s sparked with a little creativity. Whenever my kids are feeling a bit under the weather or even just a little down, these snack plates never fail to bring a smile and that “you’re loved and special to me” feeling. They also do wonders for a case of the “grumpies” and I don’t mean just with the kiddos. Here are six of our favorites and what we used to make them. I also included a few substitutions as well.

1. Mama and Baby Koala

Ingredients needed:
Green grapes or kiwi for leaves
Nuts, sunflower seeds or raisins for branches
Blueberry and red grape for noses
Apricot, plum, or small nectarine for baby koala’s head, ear and feet
Large nectarine for mama and baby koala’s bodies and heart
Small nectarine for Mama koala’s head, ears and feet
Raisins for eyes and mouths (cut raisin to make Mama Koala mouth)

2. Forest Granola Bowl

Ingredients needed:
Yogurt (Almond milk yogurt if dairy-free.)
Granola for ground (Gluten-free oatmeal if needed.)
Pomegranate, kiwi, banana, green and red apples for trees
Blueberries or blackberries for tree trunks
Mango or nectarine for sun and sun-rays
Chia, poppy seeds or even the seeds from the kiwi for clouds

3. Ewe and Me Sheep

Ingredients needed:
Cottage cheese for sheep bodies (Or try tiny cauliflower bites for a dairy-free option.)
Pretzel sticks for sheep legs (Gluten-free pretzels if needed.)
Orange for sun
Carrot for sun-rays
Grape tomatoes for sheep faces
Lettuce and herbs for our grazing pasture (You could also add edible flowers if you wanted.)

4. Tropical Parrot

Ingredients needed:
Granola bar for roost (Gluten-free if needed.)
Two nectarines: one large and one small for body, wings and tail
Yogurt (dairy or almond-milk) and two chocolate chips for eyes (dairy-free chocolate if needed)

5. Crab on the Ocean Floor

Ingredients needed:
Green pepper, dill, and cucumber for ocean plants
Red pepper for the crab’s legs
Carrot for gold fish
Daikon radish or white cheese for eyes, mouth and star fish
Black olives for eyes
Cherry tomatoes for eyes and claws
One medium sized tomato for body
Trail mix for ocean floor

6. Duck in a Pond

Ingredients needed:
Yellow and white cheese for water, eye, and duck bill (Sliced dairy-free cheese is available in both colors.)
Orange for duck
Blueberry or raisin for eye
Green pepper and carrot for cattails
