Super Easy Chocolate Covered Strawberry Hearts

Chocolate covered strawberries are a common Valentine’s Day ritual for many; but why not add an even more romantic twist by turning them into hearts! This super easy how-to will show you how to simply knock this classic favorite out of the ballpark. As an added bonus, I also find that strawberry hearts are easier to eat than whole strawberries. My kids really enjoyed volunteering as taste testers during the whole process, so grab some helpers and come join the fun!

You will need:
Toothpicks
Strawberries
Melting chocolate of your choice (dairy-free if needed)
Optional: Sprinkles, colored sugar or additional color of melting chocolate for decorating

Start by washing your berries and trimming off the green tops. Then set the fruit aside while you get your chocolate melting.

I like to use a very small slow cooker on low setting or a chocolate fondue pot. Because the temperature holds steady without scorching the chocolate, you can work at a more relaxed pace. If you do not have either appliance, a double boiler or microwave can be used.

Cut your berries in half and pat dry with a paper towel. Any extra moisture, whether juice or water, will cause your chocolate to not stick properly.

Place your berry halves side by side to form a heart and insert a toothpick through the berries to help hold the halves firmly together.

Dip your berries in your melted chocolate until fully coated. Use two forks to gently lift them out. Be careful not to poke them as this will release juice and affect the coating. Place on a wax paper lined pan to cool and harden up. Remember if you are using sprinkles, you will need to add them before the chocolate sets up. On the other hand, 3-D designs drizzled in chocolate can be added before or after chocolate coating has hardened. Want your strawberry hearts to set up faster? Place the tray in the refrigerator for a few minutes.

Carefully remove toothpicks once chocolate coating has hardened. Some toothpicks will pull straight out, while others may need a little twist to loosen them before coming out. Store in a cool place or refrigerate until ready to serve.

And last but not least, some of my kiddo’s creations. Enjoy!
